The upcoming Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl remakes reportedly feature Permanent Exp. share as in Pokémon Sword and Shield. The Exp. Share element has been around in mainline Pokémon since Red and Blue, but the eighth generation of games was the first to make its effect an unchanging element, and the mechanics are making a comeback in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl. .

Before Gen 6 Pokémon, Exp. Sharing was a held item that divided the experience gained between the Pokémon used in battle and the Pokémon that had the item. This changed in Pokémon X and Y, when Exp. Sharing became a key element. If activated, the experience would be shared with the entire party, but could be activated and deactivated at the discretion of the players. The somewhat controversial Pokémon Lets Go Pikachu and Eevee were the first entries to forgo the item entirely, instead of the group of players always earning experience points along with the option to disable the feature. Pokémon news source Serebii reports that previews for Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl show that it also features Permanent Exp. Share. Serebii explains that there is no switch to disable the mechanic, as much as he could not do it in Pokémon Sword and Shield. The reception of this decision so far seems to be divided, some claim that the community reaction to the permanent exchange of experiences is exaggerated and others argue that the decision is not faithful to the original Diamond and Pearl Pokémon and will affect the difficulty of the game.

Permanent Exp. Sharing may have started with Pokémon Lets Go Pikachu and Eevee, but it didn't seem solidified as a staple of the franchise until it reappeared in Pokémon Sword and Shield, the latest mainline dual release. The experience gain in the group was one of several complaints directed at the titles, along with the missing National Pokédex of Pokémons. Sword and Shield were criticized by some critics and veteran players for making Pokémon over-level too easy, which explains why there seems to be doubt that Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl also use permanent Exp. Share.

This is likely to continue to be a divisive issue in the Pokémon community, with one side lamenting the hit to difficulty and the other praising how it reduces grinding. Because Permanent Exp. Sharing is clearly a matter of preference, many argue that it should be an optional feature as it was previously. It would work more like a difficulty modifier in this way, with players looking for an added challenge going back to the classic experience-gaining style rather than the easier difficulty that the newer Pokémon games provide. It is not yet known for sure how Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl will handle Exp share at launch, as developer Game Freak has yet to weigh in on the matter.
