Niantic, the developer of Pokémon GO, has hinted that Pokémon shapeshifting may come to the game in the future. The mobile alternate reality title allows players to battle and capture virtual Pokémon by exploring the real world. Niantic continually updates Pokémon GO with new events and content, ensuring fans constantly have new features to explore.

Throughout the month of October, a series of special events will take place within the virtual monster collection simulator. Many of these events, such as Research Breakthroughs, raids, and Spotlight Hours, will tie into the fall season by highlighting Ghost-type Pokémon. A special event related to the release of Pokémon The Movie: Secrets of the Jungle, a Netflix animated movie that focuses on the Mythical Pokémon Zarude, was also held on October 8. A special Pokémon GO Halloween event, starting on October 15, will add even more spooky content to the game. A report from Eurogamer reveals that shapeshifting will be added to Pokémon GO soon. Throughout the beloved franchise, many creatures have alternate forms that they can transition into under certain conditions. For example, Burmy changes shape based on his surroundings, while Deerling changes shape based on the four seasons. Recently, the Pokémon Furfrou was added to Pokémon GO, with the dog-like creature possessing multiple forms that it can take on. Eurogamer asked the Niantic developers if they have plans to introduce more transforming Pokémon in future updates. The developers were evasive about the feature, emphasizing that they had nothing to announce at the time, but did mention that the Niantic team is actively investigating the possibility and could have more news soon.

Pokémon GO has received a host of new content, including additional Pokémon, since its launch in 2016. This continued evolution has allowed the game to maintain a loyal player base and as a result, the competitive scene has begun to grow. At a recent Pokémon GO Twitch Rivals event, popular streamers clashed in Pokémon battles. The event, which began on October 13, placed streamers into teams using new accounts and tasked them with catching Pokémon as quickly as possible. This assembled list of monsters was later used in the battle between factions.

As Pokémon GO continues to grow, the title has embraced more interesting franchise concepts. The shape changes help make the new Pokémon more unique and add a new level of depth to the franchise's role-playing game. With Furfrou already introducing shapeshifts to Pokémon GO, the alternate reality title is likely to implement more of these complex Pokémon in the future.
