The player count in Battlefield 2042s Hazard Zone is significantly lower than what is seen in standard multiplayer. Due to the more tactical, slow but still intense nature of Battlefield 2042's danger zone, DICE has chosen to reduce the number of players to allow only a handful of squads. In theory, this should adequately handle chaos and allow for a more suspenseful game on massive maps.

The player count in Battlefield 2042 allows up to 128 players on current generation and PC, creating the largest multiplayer matches the franchise has ever seen. In the latest generation, gamers will be stuck with the standard 64 players. As a result, next-gen players will also have their maps scaled down to make sure teams aren't too spread out and combat runs logically. A similar structure will be implemented in the new Danger Zone mode. DICE has revealed that the Battlefield 2042s Hazard Zone will be 32 players (8 squads of 4) in the current generation and PC and 24 in the last generation (6 squads of 4).

While some may have expected it to be on a larger scale, Hazard Zone is not a battle royale, which means it actually makes sense that DICE has lowered the player count. The developer detailed the mode, noting that it's not necessarily about being the last team standing or which team has the most kills, it's about staying alive and getting loot back. A smaller player count will allow players to move around the map without bumping into other squads every few seconds. There are likely to be hot spots, such as mining zones and satellite drops, but players can still move freely around the maps. There can be a bit of tension and suspense as a result of the lack of constant explosions and gunfire, possibly making it more dangerous.

DICE confirmed that there will be AI bots like in the multiplayer mode of Battlefield 2042. That said, they can be more difficult as they are not necessarily used to fill spaces on teams and are instead intended to be one of the many obstacles that they must overcome the squads. DICE noted that these bots are focused on "self-preservation" and may seek to drain players of their resources or alert other squads to the fight. Basically your main objective is to get in the way of the players. Regardless of the player count, it seems like there will be no shortage of dangers in the Battlefield 2042s Hazard Zone.
